Strong names are used by the assemblies for their unique names. It is used when we want to deploy the assembly in Global Assembly Cache then strong name helps Global Assembly Cache to differentiate two versions. Strong name is basically a unique identity of an assemblies it contains  its name, version number and culture information . It also contains  a public key and digital signature to ensure its uniqueness and protects the assembly from modification.

Steps to create and sign an assembly with a strong name by using Visual Studio:

    1. Open project in visual studio and open the shortcut menu for the project in solution explorer and click on properties.

    2. Click on the signing tab.

    3. Select the sign the assembly box.

    4. In the Choose a strong name key file box, select the option <Browse...> or <New...>
( <Browse...>  will navigate to the key file  while <New...> will open a Create strong Name Key dialog box to create a new key file ).

    5. Build your project.
