    Color Range: Selection Command

In Photoshop we often use several methods for selecting a particular portion of the layer or image. Color range is one such method through which we can select a specific portion of an image.

It is quiet good when we want to remove things or make changes within a compact image and also because it make selection very easily, it takes lesser time than selecting the image manually. If you compare it with the magic wand tool then you will find several advantages which makes it far more likable and useful than usual selection tools.

Color range basically works on the color picking method, which means it picks a specific color and make the selection according to it. You can control the color variation and its distribution also you can add different colors for adding selections. I have added a basic tutorial for better understanding so that we can have an introduction to this command.

Lets make changes to an image, I have used the image below from this link:

Open the image in Photoshop, now go to selection menu and click on color range option.

Choose color pick tool and select the brown color of Tiger, now you can see the image on the preview option of the color range palette.

Now select the add color pick tool and select the colors which you think should be added to the tiger, so that it gets added to the color variation and make a shade of it in the preview panel.

There is an option called fuzziness, move its slider to the right. It is going to add the brightness to the color which you selected. Because it adds the brightness, a variation of color happens which makes the color to spread. It occurs because now as you have added the brightness to the color pixel, Photoshop is going to calculate the similar pixels and add up to the selection.

Now when you are done click Ok and leave. Select the lasso tool and make the appropriate selection which you desire to have.

Alright, to make the selection looks sharp we are going to use refine edge option. Look over to the top menu panel and go to the right of the Photoshop window.

Click on the button and make the below settings:

Now you have the sharp selection, as you have seen it took lesser time than usual, and also a less painful in comparison to manually doing it.

Alright, Copy (ctrl+c) paste (ctrl+p) the image of tiger and make the changes to the below image as you like it.

    See below the difference:

As you can see it is quiet easy in this way to make changes to an image according to your need. I hope you have enjoyed this blog, thanks for reading it.

    Have a nice day bye.
