Here is the blog which describes that how you can play around with path & patterns. This feature helps you to fill any pattern along the desired path, it is however semi hidden. Below are the simple steps:
1.Select the Pen tool(P)and create a path.

2.Then click on the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL.
3.Simply right click and choose to FILL THE PATH.

4.Hit on the PATTERN option from the CONTENT drop down, select "PLACE ALONG PATH" by checking the SCRIPT option

Next you'll see a new dialog box opened from where you can play around with the pattern you choose to fill & get the desired result :-)
