Hiring managers is entrusted with the responsibility of filling a new position or a vacant position in the organization. They have a huge responsibility towards the organization as they are responsible for bringing in efficient and motivated employees to the organization.  Failing to do so will prove to be very costly for the organization. As a hiring manager, your job should be to attract the most suitable candidate for the job, while steering clear of the wrong ones.  Here we are enlisting the do’s and don’ts when posting jobs as a hiring manager.

    Do’s

    1. Be clear about the job description. Ambiguity could cost a lot. Do mention it explicitly if the position you are hiring for requires previous work experience. It will help in eliminating freshers who have no prior work experiences.

    2. Background research about the candidates should be done thoroughly. Use social media sites for conducting such research.

    3. When posting jobs, use the suitable job board for finding the best candidate. For example, a technical job vacancy should be posted in a technical job board.

    4. While posting jobs, make sure the website attracts good talent.

    5. Posting the necessary qualifications that is required for the job is necessary. This will prevent under qualified or sometimes over qualified candidates from applying, which in the end will reduce the hassles of short listing candidates.

    6. If the job involves reallocation or a lot of travelling, do mention it along with the job description. Better safe than going through the entire hiring process only to find that the selected candidate is not ready to reallocate.

    Don’ts

    1. Don’t forget to mention the salary range you are offering for the position. As prescribing a salary will attract more serious candidates and will give an insight as to how much is being expected from potential employees.

    2. Don’t choose the wrong job board for posting jobs. A job for marketing profile should not be posted in a job board where majority of people are from technical background.

    3. Don’t mismatch the job profile and the skill set required to be successful for that position. For example, if a person doesn’t have necessary experience in sales but is otherwise highly qualified, choosing him or her may still prove to a wrong choice. In such a situation, going for someone who has the necessary skills will be a much better choice.

So these were some of the do’s and don’ts while posting job as a hiring manager. These are certain guidelines one should follow to avoid the common mistakes made by hiring managers. Though there exist many more do’s and don’ts which are more aptly applicable to a particular industry or organization, these points are merely meant to give a generalized view.
