As a business owner, you must understand the need for technology. Businesses need to have functioning, easy to access tech that customers and employees can easily interact with. Skills like programming, gaming, designing, and other online applications and processes can be developed through your own self-guided education. You can also easily train employees to learn these skills and hire new employees who are proficient in these areas. To start on the journey to become tech-savvy, here’s what you need to know.

1. Understand What Your Company Needs

Not every business is the same. A business like Apple, for example, will be using technology in their storefronts in every aspect of the job. Different tech will cover the walls to encourage people to buy their products. They do this because their business is technology and the people in it understand that. Not every company is like that though. A car washing business will have a different purpose in mind for their use of tech and so will a pizza place. Everyone has a different need that can be fulfilled through technology. To figure out what your company needs, find out what it lacks.

Every business needs a website. Website legitimizes your business. If a customer wants to learn more about your products, they will go to the website. If you don’t have a website, the customer will simply move on and find a business who does.

Every business also needs a security system, both for the physical store and for the electronics side of the store. This means that you need to have employees who understand single point of failure and how to overcome the fallbacks of technology.

2. Create a Series of Steps to Augment the Learning Curve

Once you’ve discovered the needs of your company, it’s easy to get ahead of yourself. You might want to jump into multiple things all at once--and you can if you have the right steps planned out first. First, you need to arrange the products in order of which is most important. If your website needs to be fixed, it would be in the upper half of the list since this is how customers learn about the business. To fix your website, make sure that it is presentable and easy to understand. It should feel familiar to the customers so that they can easily find their way around it.

Next, separate the jobs that need to get done and find the right people to learn them. You will have different teams in your business who’s current jobs already closely align with the ones that are related to tech. Team those teams the skills that they need to work on the projects. Or, hire a new team and dedicate them to the programming, and the designing aspects of the work. You want the results to be high-quality. This could mean that teaching someone to program for the first time is not your answer and you’ll need to hire someone who is already proficient.

3. Not All Technology is Created Equal

The last thing that you need to know is that not all technology is created equal. When you’re working on projects, certain things will be more important and need to be prioritized. Find out which things are most important and make sure that they’re finished first. Also, be aware that not all programming languages are the same. If you’re learning to program on your own rather than hiring someone to do it for you, consider taking a coding class so that you can learn the subtle differences between the languages.
